We are looking for a committed and experienced individual to join us as a Food Security and Livelihoods Advisor, playing an exciting role in strengthening our programmes and driving sector wide change through supporting our teams in Country Offices to design, implement and learn from high quality programmes.

The successful candidate will be part of the Hunger Reduction and Livelihoods Team, which sits within the Programme Policy and Quality (PPQ) Department and is dedicated to delivering quality, evidence-based programme design and implementation support, as well as influencing broader change across the development sector. The department is key to delivering Save the Children UK’s goals on ensuring children survive, learn and are protected and to demonstrate what works to achieve this impact at scale.

As FSL Advisor you will work with colleagues across the Save the Children movement to support organisational learning and capacity building initiatives which aim to improve the quality of our programming. You will also be expected to provide thought leadership in a key thematic area, (youth livelihoods, systems change, or engaging with the private sector), and will influence decision-makers both internally and externally. In addition you will:

  • Provide technical support to the design of FSL and Youth Livelihoods programmes, ensuring they are based upon high-quality needs assessments, are in line with Save the Children’s theory of change and that they contribute towards national policies and international best practice;
  • Support fundraising efforts by contributing to the development of high-quality concept notes and proposals, participate in donor meetings and ensure that gender, resilience, systems change and child participation are mainstreamed into FSL and Youth Livelihoods programmes;
  • Contribute to the implementation of the hunger reduction and livelihoods strategy through supporting its delivery, monitoring and review;
  • Ensure integration with other sectors in particular nutrition and child protection, as part of Save the Children’s Child Poverty framework which aims to ensure FSL and Youth Livelihoods programming contributes to outcomes for children.

To be successful you will have a high and substantial level of technical expertise and knowledge of the debates surrounding at least one of the following technical areas: youth livelihoods, (market) systems change, engaging with the private sector. A good understanding of broader livelihoods programming e.g. graduation from poverty, early warning early action, resilience, cash transfer programming, gender-sensitive livelihoods, VSLAs and IGAs will also be necessary. Strong analytical and conceptual skills are essential together with the ability to think and plan strategically. Other core skills and experience are as follows:

  • Demonstrated experience in the design, implementation and management of FSL programmes in an international development context;
  • Knowledge of institutional donors and a proven track record in developing funding proposals and reports for a range of institutional and other donors
  • Proven experience of developing effective working relationships with a range of senior stakeholders e.g. government, donors, academics including successful influencing.
  • Familiarity with various analytical tools related to FSL e.g. the Household Economy Analysis approach and the Cadre Harmonise/Integrated Phase Classification (IPC)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English (French desirable)
  • Ability to travel within the region and globally up to 30%
  • BSc/BA level or equivalent field experience relating to FSL

Jobs are positioned within the salary structure on the basis of evaluation. New employees would normally be appointed at the bottom of the grade, however the appointed salary may also take into account the relevant experience a candidate brings to a role.
